Stroke Awareness Month - Part I
May is National Stroke Awareness Month and Armstrong Fairway Insurance Agency would like to take this opportunity to share information with you.
Many people don’t realize strokes can happen to anyone, at any time. There is no set time-frame or age for strokes and surprisingly enough, the greatest time for strokes in children is during their first year of life and during the time right before and after birth. Strokes are actually in the top 10 causes of death in children. Below are some of the warning signs to look for in both children and adults:
Seizures, extreme sleepiness and tendency to use only one side of their body
Severe headaches, vomiting, sleepiness, dizziness, loss of balance and coordination as well as symptoms adults encounter.
Sudden numbness or weakness of face, arms or leg (especially on one side of the body), confusion, trouble speaking/understanding, trouble seeing, dizziness, weakness, loss of balance/coordination, severe headache with no known cause.
An easy way to remember the signs of a stroke is to think F.A.S.T.
F – Face: Does one side of the face droop when the person smiles?
A – Arms: Does one arm drift downward when arms are raised?
S – Speech: Is their speech slurred or not making sense?
T – Time: Time to call 9-1-1 if you observe any of these warning signs.
If someone shows signs of a stroke, note the time the first symptom was observed, as time is critical when treating a stroke. For more information on strokes, click here.
